Fragile contexts<\/h5>

Civic society space globally keeps shrinking year by year. The JF program target countries, and fragile and conflict-affected states, are not an exception.<\/p>

Currently, five JF countries fall into the \u2018repressed\u2019 category. Afghanistan has changed from \u2018repressed\u2019 to \u2018closed\u2019, reflecting the prevailing atmosphere of fear and violence since the takeover by the Taliban. Security in the Sahel and DRC is deteriorating, women’s rights in Afghanistan are increasingly restricted, and conflict is ongoing in South Sudan. In all six countries, civic space is limited, and in some countries, it is fast decreasing.<\/p>

The current trends clearly show the pertinence and urgency of the Dutch government\u2019s continued emphasis in its foreign policy on the importance of a vibrant and diverse civil society that can act as a countervailing power against authoritarianism.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Afghanistan<\/a><\/h3>

Afghanistan has been mired in violent conflict for more than 40 years. The recent resurgence of the Taliban threatens the safety and security of its people, in particular those of women and young people. Afghan society is undermined by climate change, geopolitical meddling, and warlordism.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Burundi<\/a><\/h3>

Burundi, situated in the Great Lakes region, has a weak justice system, cyclical violence, and little room for civil society to operate. Its internal conflict is primarily political and ethnic, and is characterized by a strongly authoritarian government.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Just Future works primarily on the ground in the eastern provinces of the DRC: Ituri and North and South Kivu. These regions play host to thousands of internally displaced peoples, and are affected by armed group activity.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mali is subjected to many intersecting forces across its vast territory: climate change, fundamentalism, tribal unrest, migration, and crime. Niger is one of the world's poorest countries. It has been affected by the changing climate and desertification, as well as streams of migrants passing through its borders towards Europe.
