Research report – Land Justice Pathways in South Sudan

Bernardo Almeida and Janine Ubink, February 2024

Leiden University’s Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law Governance and Development (VVI) has released a report shedding light on the critical issue of land justice in South Sudan. Collaborating closely with local partners, the institute’s research aims to empower advocacy efforts, influence policy decisions, and drive programs that enhance access to justice in the region.

At the heart of this endeavor lies a deep commitment to understanding and addressing the multifaceted challenges surrounding justice provision in South Sudan. The focus is not only on the responsiveness and accountability of justice providers but also on the role of justice seekers, particularly those from marginalized communities, in navigating disputes and asserting their rights.

During the initial phase of the Just Future consortium (2021-2022), VVI delved into the complex landscape of land justice in South Sudan. Recognizing that secure access to land is a fundamental concern for many in fragile and conflict-affected environments, the research report seeks to expand our understanding of practical interventions and the evolving dynamics of land justice in the region.

By shining a spotlight on these issues, the report not only adds to our existing knowledge but also serves as a catalyst for action. It is a testament to the collaborative efforts of researchers, local partners, and communities working together to build a more just and equitable future in South Sudan.
